SAS International’s External Gale Resistant Ceiling Specified for New Shopping Centre

Market leader SAS International has provided a gale resistant System 330 metal ceiling system for the recently completed Bouverie Place Shopping Centre in Folkestone in Kent.
SAS was approached by the development’s architects, GMW Architects, to provide an external ceiling system that would be able to withstand significant wind loadings while still integrating seamlessly into the overall design of the centre.
To ensure its ceilings can withstand extreme wind loads, SAS has undertaken extensive wind resistance testing and provided GMW with a solution designed around System 330. In Folkestone, wind speeds off the English Channel have been recorded as high as 100 mph and the SAS suspended ceiling system had to be resilient enough to meet this potentially dangerous natural hazard.
SAS provided over 650 square metres of System 330 suspended metal ceiling tiles, which incorporate luminaires, for the shopping centre’s internal and external communal walkways. The entire system was coated with an SAS paint finish that is able to withstand the coarse demands of the salty marine environment.
Some of the UK’s leading high street names are now located at Bouverie Place. SAS International also supplied the metal ceiling system for the centre’s new BHS store.
The £30m 200,000 square foot shopping centre is a vital component in the regeneration of Folkestone and consists of two floors of retail space, a residential element comprising 12 flats as well as parking for 570 cars. Bouverie Place is the first joint venture between Bride Hall Developments and Warner Estate since Warner invested in Bride Hall in 2004 and is the culmination of Shepway District Council’s 30 year struggle to secure a landmark shopping centre in Folkestone’s town centre.
